Commercialization of Hooping?

I recently came across a post on Tribe questioning the "commercialization" of hooping. There ARE people out there who are actually making a living off their love of hooping. Some of the companies have become really big. I think it's awesome.  Coming from someone who doesn't really "do" 9-5, this is a celebration.......that there are folks out there who have found a way to make a living off doing what they love and sharing such an incredibly positive movement with the bigger world.

The statement on Tribe was that hooping has been this really special and sacred movement for people in certain "alternative" communities and it seemed that the concern may be that it could become diluted as just a "workout." It is my feeling that hooping in any form is a boon to our culture. If you are hooping, likely you have a smile on your face or you are at least smiling inside. Hooping makes people happy! So whether you are hooping because you want to burn some belly fat, work on your coordination, or working with sacred movement with the intention of raising vibration.......it's all an honorable way to move in the hoop.

Some days I come to my hoop, just like my yoga mat, for different reasons. We are not static creatures. We are dynamic, pulsing, changing beings and if we always did everything for the same reasons, no matter how metaphysical they might be, life would seem very boring.....in my humblest of opinions.

The Winter '07 Session HoopDance class is about to come to a close. It has been so rewarding for me to see students go from just relearning or for the first time learning to just keep a hoop going to now doing tricks, spinning, moving around with the hoop going and SMILING the whole while.

The Winter '08 Session will begin after the New Year. Dates TBA.
